98 year old dobri dobrev, a man who lost his hearing in the second world war, walks 10 kilometers from his village in his homemade clothes and leather shoes to the city of sofia, where he spends the day begging for money.

though a well known fixture around several of the city’s chruches, known for his prostrations of thanks to all donors, it was only recently discovered that he has donated every penny he has collected — over 40,000 euros — towards the restoration of decaying bulgarian monasteries and churches and the utility bills of orphanages, living instead off his monthly state pension of 80 euros.

Using projection and gestures to create interactive relationship with information - video embedded below:

Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a next generation user interface which can accurately detect the users finger and what it is touching, creating an interactive touchscreen-like system, using objects in the real word.

“We think paper and many other objects could be manipulated by touching them, as with a touchscreen. This system doesn’t use any special hardware; it consists of just a device like an ordinary webcam, plus a commercial projector. Its capabilities are achieved by image processing technology.”

Using this technology, information can be imported from a document as data, by selecting the necessary parts with your finger.

So I emailed my resume to a couple of libraries hiring in my area about a week ago. I fit the minimum qualifications, I think my resume is decent, etc, etc. I haven’t heard back from anyone yet, should I follow up? How do you follow up? Is it rude? Because if I were an employer I’d be like “well…

Have you sent off your resume to anyone for a review? I’d recommend doing that, and then contacting the libraries in order to provide an updated resume. That way, your follow-up is meaningful and the HR person or hiring librarian will be looking at your resume.

What positions are you applying for? Page or circ? Or something else?

Things have been quiet recently, at TheGlobalLibrarian. Sorry for that, but with the impending move from Kazakhstan to the States (leaving on Monday at 4am) and job interviews stacked throughout the month of May, life’s been a little hectic.

Going through some old school papers, I found some pretty great career aspirations of mine. Some careers I had in mind? Interior designer, florist, marine biologist (only if I could work at the Shedd Aquarium though), famous singer, gymnast (for a hot second), French teacher, magician. The florist…

Mine changed yearly up through high school, but it was generally things that girls weren’t big in (cowgirl, firegirl, etc). I was an innovative little kid.

In high school, I wanted to be an architect, which was super George Costanza of me. The sad thing was that, even with all the CAD classes, I only had like one building design that I ever wanted to draw. I was doomed to fail.

Then I wanted to be a botanist. That also didn’t pan out.

Woah, it’s already time for a Friday post, and I’ve been caught unawares. This week being my last full week at Nazarbayev University, I’ve been majorly busy in prepping things for the awesome librarian taking over in the Digital Centre, doing interviews for a new position (good things are happening on that front), and packing (er, so far just moving all of my work computer gif collection stuff over to my laptop).

We also had visits this week from two University of Wisconsin librarians, one of whom was a great help in working out some major issues in the Digital Centre. But! It’s also meant that I haven’t had any time to scan things. Or ready my Friday post.

So! Instead of the usual animal gif, here are some funny pictures (a la Hyperbole and a Half) that I drew on the Digital Centre whiteboard over the past few weeks. (Only one person here got the reference.)
